Exams, Superstitions, and Kit Kat Bars
The National Center Test for University Admission is a universal examination for Japanese universities. All national/public universities require applicants to take this exam. During the exam season, the superstitious nature of the Japanese becomes apparent. In fact, you will find various lucky charms being sold around this time. The most popular are charms purchased from a shrine or temple. However, the Kit Kat (a chocolate bar) is also popular. Why? The Japanese pronounce it as kitto katto. It sounds like kitto katsu which means, You will surely win. Parents often buy Kit Kats for their children for exam days. It is just a fun play on words, but if it makes them feel better, why not? Why We Can Be Moral Without Religion - 947 Words
Morality is the root of all that is good, and the beginning of all that is evil. It can be found in the mightiest of rulers, and the smallest of children. It is what separates man from animals. It is what makes humans, human. Religion, as a whole is not needed to make a man moral, but it does have a huge part in the world. Before we discover why we can be moral without religion, we must first understand what morality is, and where it begins. There is absolutely no doubt that morality is something we are born with. From childhood, we know the difference of what humans perceive as right and wrong. Humans are born with three distinct features programmed into us. The first is our instinct. It is the one trait we are born with that we share†¦show more content†¦Without it, we would have no black and white. We would have no conviction or guilt. Our sentiency would be useless, and we would be little more than animals. Without morality, we lose a large deal of our humanity. But, is all morality the same? Does every man have the same morals as his neighbor? And what are morals? Morals are what each human decides to be right and wrong. For instance, one man may find it morally wrong to steal, whereas a second man may have no convictions of stealing. That being said, it is very rare, if not impossible, for two men to have the exact same morals. In fact, if no man has the exact same morality, then there will never be a true peace on earth. Morality is nearly never the same for two people. If this is the case, then how does one decide his own morals? Typically, the morals of a human being are heavily influenced by the environment around them when they are young. The most common influence is the family around them. From birth our parents or guardians raise us as they see fit. And because of this, they will shape our ideals and thoughts, and, in effect, our morals. As time goes on, however, we start to become our own person. We start to think for ourselves. Our morality is thus, what we make of it. By doing so, it punishes the people of today to make up for the actions from the people in the past. Should a person in todays generation suffer for the actions of our ancestors? Should one collect special benefits for the suffering of their ancestors? By offering special benefits, would it solve or make up for the injustice of slavery? African Americans did suffer in the past from the injustice of slavery. Take in mind that it was the past, and the injustice of slavery does not affect African Americans in todays day and time. White Americans in todays day and time did not own or have anything to do with slavery. If one was to be punished or receive special benefits it should be the people that slavery directly affected.In the history of the United States the American Indians were slaughtered, and are still collecting for the injustice actions of the past. America is still providing help, and handing out special benefits. American Indians receive special benefits such as land being put aside called reservations, allowed to put up casinos, and are able to receive scholarship funds for college with fewer qualifications. The experience that the American Indians went through was a lot worse than the experience that the African Americans faced. In both cases I believe that the people of today should not have to feel guilty for the actions of their ancestors. If the Unites States developed reparations program for the injustice of slavery of African Americans it would create no good but only conflict. Two wrongs do not make a right. Punishing the people of today for the actions of the past creates reverse racism. Its simply stating that because one is African American that he or she deserves special benefits. It forms racism towards other races. It is saying that just because one is not African American that they do not deserve to receive special treatment, and that they are not as good as African Americans. African Americans today were never slaves, nor were white Americans today slave owners. African Americans have recovered from slavery, and do not need any extra help. It is more satisfying to accomplish something on ones own. Instead of developing a reparation program witch would hurt the nation, as a country we should educate so that the same problem will never occur again. One should learn from the past, and not make the same mistake. A reparation program teaches discrimination rather than eliminating it. Reparation will only separate people by race, rather than seeing all Americans as people. All people should be treated the same regardless of ones gender or race. By teaching America about its past will only bring a brighter future.
